On 1.7.97, the Palestinian military court rules against 8 members of the Presidential Security Service accused of torturing Radwan to death. The sentences range from the death penalty to 6 months' imprisonment.

25.6.97 A no-confidence motion by the Israeli opposition is defeated by 55 votes against 50, with the Gesher party absent from the Knesset vote.

28.6.97 Jordan freezes an agreement with Israel, allowing international flights destined to Eilat, to land at Aqaba Airport in Jordan.

28.6.97 An Israeli woman is arrested in Hebron after putting up posters depicting the Muslim Prophet Mohammad as a pig. The act triggers Palestinian protests and clashes with the Israeli army. The woman is subsequently tried by an Israeli court and receives a long prison sentence.

30.6.97 The Israeli District Court releases on bail Nahum Korman, a settler from Betar settlement, accused of beating to death ll-year-old Hilmi Shawasha from Hussan village near Bethlehem on 29.10.96.

11.8.97 Zahya Harb, a 19-year-old Bedouin woman, is forced to give birth in a car at a checkpoint in Betunya. She was made to wait two hours for an Israeli soldier to decide whether she should be allowed entry into Ramallah to reach a hospital just 1.5 kilometers from the checkpoint.

12.8.97 A military court convicts three members of Yasser Arafat's elite bodyguard unit of treason and sentences the ringleader to death. They are found guilty of working for a foreign country and of spying for the Israeli intelligence service.

14.9.97 Under heavy police protection, Jewish settlers from the Ateret Cohanim group enter a Palestinian home allegedly bought from Fouad Hadieh in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Ras aI-Amud, with an Arab population of 11,000. Large-scale protest demonstrations by members of the Israeli peace camp and by Palestinians follow.

15.9.97 Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu condemns the takeover by Jewish settlers of two homes in Arab East Jerusalem. A compromise solution is reached regarding the status of the property.

22.9.97 A gunman, firing from a car, shoots and slightly wounds two Israeli security guards in Amman. The Jordanian Islamic Resistance, a previously unknown group, claims responsibility. Jordan condemns the attack as an act of terrorism.

22.9.97 Israel formally requests the extradition of Co!. Ghazi Jabali, commander of the Palestinian police, and 4 other Palestinians, members of Hamas. Palestinian Attorney General Fayez Abu Rahmeh says his government wouIrt ignore the request. Co!. Jabali is suspected by Israel of "organizing terrorist cells within the Palestinian police."

24.9.97 Palestinian police in Nablus arrest around 20 Palestinians linked with Hamas, a day after Israel identified 4 bombers involved in recent suicide attacks.

26.9.97 Israeli Mossad agents botch an attempt to kill a Hamas political leader, Khaled Meshal, in Amman, Jordan. Two Mossad agents, holding Canadian passports, attacked Meshal with poisonous chemicals. They were caught by Meshal's guard. As a result of pressure by King Hussein, Israel gave an antidote to the poison. Later, Hamas leader Sheikh Ahmad Yassin is freed from an Israeli prison in exchange for the two agents.

26.9.97 Bowing to U.S. and Israeli pressure to crack down on Hamas activists, Palestinian police close and seal 16 Islamic welfare institutions in Gaza.

28.9.97 The Israeli peace movement, Gush Shalom (Peace Bloc), calls for a boycott of all goods produced in Jewish settlements in territories occupied by Israel in 1967. "We call upon the whole world to support peace by not buying products made in settlements," says a leader of the group.

28.9.97 Israel agrees to resume negotiations with the Palestinians on the implementation of the interim self-rule accords and releases $17 million in frozen funds to the cash-strapped Palestinian Authority. This came one day ahead of a crucial meeting in New York between Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy, U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Arafat's deputy, Mahmoud Abbas.
During this period in the occupied territories, 12 Palestinians, as well as 4 Palestinian children under the age of 16, were killed by the Israeli Security Forces. Two Palestinians were killed by Israeli civilians and 3 Israeli civilians were killed by Palestinians. Within the Green Line, 1 Palestinian was killed by Israeli civilians and 20 Israeli civilians were killed by Palestinians.
