Ra'anan Alexandrowicz directed the film The Law in These
Parts, about the creation of the legal mechanism operated
by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in the West Bank. The
release and broadcast of the film in Israel and abroad
created a public discussion about the role of the law and
legal professionals in the military occupation. The film
won the Best Documentary award at the 2011 Jerusalem
Film Festival, the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize in
Documentary at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and a
2013 Peabody award for electronic journalism, among other awards.
Looking at the legal system and what happens to law in these circumstances can teach
us how the basic values of democracy are endangered by the occupation.
